  • Get wifi from your cellphone!

If you carry a laptop and a cellphone from Verizon or Sprint, and others that support it, you can get a wifi connection from your cellphone for about $50/month. What you're talking about is not a strength of the iPhone, but a weakness. The iPhone could be providing all laptop users among its owners with a wifi connection, but Jobs didn't care ...

  • Privateer System

I agree with most of Mr. Wu's points, especially the note about how most communications systems infrastructures have been created by private companies. That's what capitalism is all about, create an incentive to make a profit and the infrastructure will follow. However I don't believe that public money is necessity for success in infrastructure. ...

  • Municipal WiFi

We are beyond the current reach of DSL, in the far southeast of the Dallas area and we did not want to use cable, as we use satellite for TV and the local wireline provider for telephone. Cable wants to force you to go with their bundle. Otherwise, you pay a lot for internet access. We use an alternative: fixed wireless, with a second dish on our ...

  • No Free Wifi May Be Good

Maybe it's a good thing that local governments are not offering Wifi. Never mind the initial infrastructure costs and maintenance costs -- what about the security costs? Experience tells me that the average internet user is blissfully unaware of security. Experience also tells me that many of the people who own/operate Wifi routers are also ...

  • iPhone is hype/junk

The iPhone is a big pile of marketing gimmick, and very little else. I knew it was going to be a POS when Jobs was going on about how they can't allow third party apps to run on his pwecious widdoe phone because it could ''crash the network.'' Not enough rolleyes in the world for that. Impressed because it has WiFi, are you? Think this is ...

  • Tmobile Wifi/Voip

Pogue just wrote about the revolution from T-mobile. They have introduced a new phone that switches between cell and voip when depending on where they are. He argues that they did this because its cheaper than putting up new towers. and it works pretty well. Just thought you'd like to know
