Republican hypocrisy
Were you moved by John McCain's lofty promises about the options the Republicans will allow to choose among for your child's education? This is how the Republican platform translates - we won't let you choose whether or when to have a child, but once you're saddled with the little brat we'll let you choose how to educate him or her. Give me a ...

On this issue John McCain and George W. Bush aren't the same
I complete agree that Bush/Cheney's disdain for the Constitution and the rule of law is the greatest (of many) failures of the past eight years. Perhaps the Dems aren't making a lot of noise because on this issue there actually is some daylight between McCain's position and Bush's, and McCain's positions haven't been all that different from ...

Torture & Bauer
Doesn't Lithwick's dissection of US torture policy miss important points? The policy was first decided upon by the Bush-Cheney regime, and afterwards their lawyers were ordered to scrape up justifications. Those lawyers who didn't go along with the policy were sidelined or scrapped. The fall-back on the Bauer character is of course no legal ...

Amazing that Americans Have This Discussion
Having studied American civics in grade school and high school, and having my doubts that Bush Cheney or anyone else in our current White House similarly learned about American history, traditions, institutions and law, it continually amazes me that this Bush Cheney Presidency has run riot so egregiously. Congress? Lay down. The Courts? Lay ...

Great Review of Some Important Books . . .
. . . BOOKS which I think all Americans need to read and consider: Making Government Work, by Fritz Hollings Torture Team: Rumsfeld's Memo and the Betrayal of American Values, by Phillipe Sands The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned Into a War on American Ideals (Hardcover), by Jane Mayer. Terrorism and Democracy ...

More on Cheney Misunderstanding '24'
The irony for Cheney, Woo et all is that their attempt to make ‘torture’ a political wedge issue backfired. Trying to justify torture as a matter of policy was politically stupid. Cheney would have been smarter to admit he was operating ‘outside the law’ on a few cases (recent reports show White House approval of torture on three known suspects ...

Finally someone makes the crucial point
When supporters of torture try to justify their position, it's always about the ticking time bomb scenario. That's because it's always easy to construct hypotheticals in which some heinous act appears to be less evil than some even more heinous alternative. But the whole point here is that this debate is about government policy and the law. ...

Web of Complicity
This map should be posted in every restroom in the world and should serve as the basis of a Watergate style congressional investigation with hearings that would eclipse the OJ trial.

The Importance of Prison Time for Prisoner-Abusers
If we do not find a way to expose those responsible for deeds we all thought were confined to the dungeons of Joseph Stalin and Kim Jong Il and a few other like-minded potentates, the next time (and there surely will be next-times aplenty) these practices will have the force and respectability of precedent. And folks like me and most of you ...
