A note on tipping
The author was absolutely right about the no tipping. Unfortunately, there were always some lao wai with expense accounts being an ass and spoiling the workers with tips. When the bosses and managers at these establishments got a wind of this tipping concept, some started charging a 10% ''Service fee'' on top of your bill. That money IS NOT GOING ...

Coffee and Women
This is a very interesting article; however, I was left a little confused by the ending. The solution for women waiting longer for coffee than men is to hope for women only coffee shops? Fortunately, I bring my coffee from home to work. But, when I do stop in a coffee shop maybe I can use a ploy from my mother's generation to even the odds. I ...

Re: Understandable annoyance; Delays in coffee shops.
With all due respect...the researchers must have never waited tables putting themselves through school. The entire grouping of those that ''waited longer'' are almost always lumped into a category of ''poor tippers''. Ask any sandwich shop waitress honest enough to answer the question! It's not sexist, racsist, ageist (sp?)...think..To Insure ...

Re: Are Men Better Tippers?
Having been a server off and on over the years, I can say with certainty that as a group, men definitely do tip better than women. Probably 8 out of 10 men tip at least 15 percent for good service, leaving 2 at the substandard level of tipping for the same good service. On the other hand, probably 6 out of 10 women tip 15 percent for the same ...

Re: Unequal Service: Bars same as coffee shop
The real issue here is lesbian tipping habits, even if the women at the coffee shops are all heterosexuals. Lesbians have such a reputation as poor tippers that it negatively affects all women. Exhibit A: Hillary!

Coffee: Who tips more and more often, M or W?
The memoir ''The Immortal Class: Bicycle Messengers and The Cult of Human Power'' by Travis Culley, a bicycle messenger delivered a fascinating ethnographic analysis: as a bike messenger, he could count on taxicabs with a single man passenger to be aggressive and speedy (and thus anticipate cut-offs and passing) and taxicabs with a single woman ...

Minimum wage? HA!
At least where I live, servers only get 60% of minimum wage... thats $3.72 an hour. Take that minus taxes on 15% of sales during a day and tips are the only money you have to live on. Paychecks are almost non-existant. 15% is considered part of base income; if I actually make that in a day depends only on what people decide my servitude is worth.
