Sarah Palin-Voter demographics
Your missing the important 'demographic' word here...MOM. Hockey mom, soccer mom, baseball mom, cub scout mom, PTA mom. Doesn't matter... we all face the same demands and challanges...and regardless of anything else... it means we can instantly relate.

Re: fussball, voetbal, football, fodbold, calcio,
I don't see the Hapsburg connection. What does feel nineteenth century to me is that there are certain states that seem to feel they have legitimate spheres of influence extending in Europe, Middle East, and Africa. France sees Chad as something of a client state. Russia clearly feels it should remain the dominant voice in Central Europe. The ...

Re: football
I lived in Germany when it was still divided, and I was struck that a lot of loyalties seemed to be primarily to states, partly because of the depressing history of German nationalism. I was in Bavaria, so perhaps I had too much of a bias for that reason. Anyway, German unification took me totally by surprise. I had no idea the Westerners would ...

football
I think one of the great challenges we face as we move into the twenty-first century is an inadequate vocabulary. Applebaum reminds us that nation-states are not what they seem, and she's versed enough in European history to know they never were. There was never a single people occupying a contiguous area of land with a common culture enjoying ...

Americans, don't bother. You'll never understand.
I admire the way many Americans have tried to ''get into'' soccer. They even endeavour to call it ''football'', in an attempt to display their lack of parochialism and willingness to accept the global game. But it won't work. Contrary to popular belief, Americans do play soccer. They've played it for over 100 years. But for some reason, ...

Casting honest eyes on the rest of the planet
Thank God a reporter is honest enough to spotlight the truth: that racism is not just a disaster in the U.S. but in too many parts of the world...maybe every part. Beyond whatever you may feel about policy, if the U.S. elects Obama perhaps it will get the momentum rolling in as the suits say, ROW: ''Rest of world.'' All you had to do was follow ...

Ball is round
Not sure how one could be a responsible journalist and forget to mention Football365.com - by far the most amusing Limey soccer website out there - while instead citing mainstream media. Laziness or deliberate?

Re: Best post of the day
ChicagoEngineer:Though its funny, in both your version and jeqal's, the Republican car of choice is American made and the Democrats' foreign, which doesn't mesh with #9, and yet I'm pretty sure you're right on both counts. The mind boggles. The NFL is pretty widely accepted... Soccer for the Dems maybe? Die hard democrat here and I own two ...

you forgot the women's national team
Uh, hello, Earth to Eggers! The US women's national soccer team has built a dynasty of winning or placing in international competition. Remember their two Olympic gold medals and two World Cup titles? Their sold out Rose Bowl performance in 1999 against China? By ignoring their achievements, you've done a disservice to the American soccer ...
