yard-sharing
when community garden space isn't readily available ...
The Los Angeles Community Garden Council had a waiting list problem -- so they helped create http://www.GrowFriend.org, a site that links land holders who don't want to garden with gardeners who don't have land. It's like a dating service for yard-sharing/school gardens/churches, etc ... and while it's only being used in LA, it will work ...

Of course choosing private schools deprives public schools
On a group level. If most of the prosperous parents in a community choose private schools, it does tend to diminish public schools. Why? Well, the prosperous parents are usually the movers and shakers in a community. If their kids are esconced in private schools, they basically don't care about what's going on in public schools, and after a ...

Schools
Interesting that you're considering v. different neighborhoods such as AU Park and Silver Spring. One question though - what about schools? If you buy in the District, do you feel you're on the hook for private schools, at least for jr. high and high school? Or would you consider sending your children to Deal and Wilson?

Is it the Bad Teachers?
The discussion about what is wrong with our schools usually center around one of the following bad guys: Bad Teachers Un-Uninvolved Parents Unions Funding Too much administration Bad Kids I think all of these factions influence the quality of education in this country to varying degrees, but I think we forget about one of the bad ...

Thanks for Researching This, Rather Than Healthy Family Life
The complete and inane turpitude of every aspect of American life and attitudes and values continues to astonish me, over time. I would guess that no American living today under the age of 20 or 30 knows or can conceive of the Great American Family as I experienced it, along with so many other Americans, in the 1950s and 1960s here in America. I ...

Hello Goodbye, Melvyl and Bob Brass
You two really ''went to town'' or ''to the mat'' here in this string, didn't you? I came across Bob Brass posting much later, and trailed him back here. Bob is of high intelligence, got a good education, his Mom taught kids in New York City most if not all of her career, and Bob worked as an analyst of sorts for Uncle Sam. Melvyl is also an ...

good teacher, bad teacher
This article tackles an issue which I wish I heard talked about more often in schools across the country. Even thinking back to the truly ''bad'' teachers I had here and there, I can think of a few subjects in which having a great teacher would have helped me in many ways. We all remember bad teachers we had, but the good ones stand out even more. ...
