Too cute by half
This article was too cute by half. The Segway is a novel and useful transitional mode of personal transport that need more terrain to cover in cities around the world. I was particularly disappointed when Las Vegas did not instantly adopt them for its vast stretches of sidewalk and casino floor, where my legs wear out long before my money does. ...

Copyright in the real world
Please... every TV and radio station in the country basically rewrites the local paper every day and reads the short version. You're acting as though all this were new. Copyright does not exist to protect economic rights. It was enacted to encourage a public culture at a time when authorship was being stolen: Someone would republish a book with ...

Re: TBS did not originate the "24 Hours of 'A Christmas Stor
It's hysterical that you were challenged by ''peers'' who didn't understand the marathon concept. How big a stretch is that concept? What would happen if you suggested the best length for a sitcom would be 45 minutes? Their heads would explode. Hey, I'm in radio, the medium that thinks playing Christmas music at Christmas time is revolutionary. ...

Shepherd was an artist
When you listen to the recordings of his shows from 40 years ago the most striking ingredient is the commercials. Listen to the monologue. Time and space disappears. Like all true art it has no relationship to the calendar. Then a commercial comes on and pow, it's 40 years ago and seems impossibly corny and out of date. But Shepherd always sounds ...

Losing Newspapers Is Like Losing Vinyl Records--Never Forget
I loved Jackson Browne albums with their exquisite vinyl records inside, their artistic outer sleeve art, the lyrics printed in large letters allowing me to sing a long immediately upon opening the prize, and mostly the then-state of the art sound of a clean spin on a solid turntable with a fresh stylus. I was once asked what made me the happiest ...

Plotz 2.0
Whether the source be a plentiful fridge of 'Fresca' or the lingering effects of cold medicine, David Plotz's contribuitions were cogent, informative and engaging. Mr. Plotz was even--dare I say it?--witty and insightful. Thanks.

GABFEST RE: BROOKS COLUMN
REGARDING: GABFEST ON POTUS 08 (SLATE.COM) I heard your conversation regarding David Brooks vacuous column on Senator Obama. You indicated agreement that Obama seems not to ''take and action,'' to be ''too thoughtful,'' to not have substance. Really? This young, bi-racial man who grew up without a father in the home, raised by a single mother ...

Not ready to see CBS news go
Honestly, I'd hate to see CBS News go as a whole. Sure, it's not great, and isn't bound to get any better, but it does provide some things that other sources are severely lacking. CBS News Radio. Sure this could stick around if they ditch news or just make it part of the entertainment division, but their radio uses their television as a crutch. ...

Thank you very much!
Anne Applebaum is right. I remember stories from my father as well as my uncle how much they appreciated the fact that they were able to listen in their Youth to RIAS and similar broadcasts behind the iron curtain. They listened out of curiosity for real news. But of course also out of love for music that was not part of the state sponsored ...
