Re: Nidal Hassan Motivated By Islam? Groundbreaking!
Clarity of thought is groundbreaking. Not tongue in cheek as the bournite posts, but ground breaking words by Hitchens because of decades of censorship of real Atheist insight. If Atheists write it, it must be wrong according to religious ...

Curiosity Killed the Baby
Curiosity Killed the Baby. The big pharmaceutical and advertiser supported brain studies have now entered the minds of babies and this book touts it as a good thing. Giving up their time to take the time from the infant and experimenting on a baby with the “tools” of developmental psychology! The tools are brain implants and communications ...

true happiness
I am reading (and enjoying ) a book by Susan Neiman ''Moral Clarity'' which is much more interesting than it sounds! Here is a quote about Happiness I think is worth some discussion on this site- ''Like most people you are likely to devote most of your attention to your own happiness (or lack thereof) and my perfection (or lack thereof) What if ...

Complex Issues
As a retired, board certified psychologist, perhaps I can contribute something here. First, there is some legitimacy to these efforts. 1. To get reimbursed for treatment, there must be a clinical diagnosis. 2. Diagnosis in mental health is no easy matter. There are few, if any, ''gold standard'' diagnostic tests for any disorders. ...

Psychiatrists are in the business
of acquiring as many patients as possible; that means, quite simply, to find as many mental disorders as possible to diagnose, and to treat; moreover, they are in cahoots with the drug companies who are in the business of selling medications. It is quite possible to hold that Western Society with its premium on profit and competition and is bound ...

New insights on materialism
Excellent blog! I am a new reader of this discussion, and I must admit I have gained several insights. While seemingly obvious after reading the articles, it is not always apparent what motivates people. I am a firm believer that everyone is selfish, and, in fact, that every action we do is selfish in nature. However, this is not necessarily a ...

Idleness as a way of parenting.
I couldn't agree more. I run an award-winning web site for kids, Inkless Tales, at www.inklesstales.com - endorsed by the ALA, the Encyclopedia Britannica, and RIF - heavy hitters - and the site is all designed for learning - but the site is all rigorously tested first. By kids. For fun. My own kids? We have ''do-nothing'' days. Lots ...

No Mystery Why This Appeals to Boys
It's no mystery why children prefer Star Wars to other stories about superheroes, Biblical figures, etc. The characters are easier to relate to, Luke goes from being a boy many can somewhat relate to into a superhero (and far from perfect, adding to his humanity), and the special effects clinches it. And your child psychologist promoted one ...

Wow...the "perfect" reminder
That was exactly what I needed to hear and the exact time! As a therapist, I remind my clients of this quite often but I will direct them to the ''Happiness Project'' now. I am grateful for the reminder myself! Stephanie

Evolutionary Psychology - Problems can be found anywhere
If you look at the extremes of any topic then you will inevitably find some flawed ideas. The Idea of modules is the perfect example. When most Evolutionary Psychologists talk about modules they don't mean a specific brain structure that does a job. They mean that different areas within the brain operate to perform the procedure. Therefore there ...
