Playpen during holidays...
In the 1980's, we always took a playpen with us when we traveled to grandparent homes that were not baby-proof, and our babies slept safely in the playpen. However, the best use of the playpen came at Christimas time. In our otherwise baby-proof home, we put the Christmas tree in the playpen! Ornaments were safe from the baby. The baby was safe ...

Graduation, Mother, Cheater Father, Step-etc.
Might I suggest that it's not her mother's event. It's HER OWN GRADUATION. NOT HER MOTHER's! If mother (or whoever) wants to act like a child let her do it at something that is her own event. If mother doesn't get it together she will be missing out on a lot more than a cheating ex-husband. In our family we decided that we would treat my ...

Idleness as a way of parenting.
I couldn't agree more. I run an award-winning web site for kids, Inkless Tales, at www.inklesstales.com - endorsed by the ALA, the Encyclopedia Britannica, and RIF - heavy hitters - and the site is all designed for learning - but the site is all rigorously tested first. By kids. For fun. My own kids? We have ''do-nothing'' days. Lots ...

Teen's having babies
Based on the recent (December 2008) study, looking back on 28 years of screen-time (mostly television), excessive use of screens promotes early and risky sexual activity. With young people watching hours of television, spending hours more on line, with games and texts, it is no surprise that that they crave some kind of physical contact with real ...

Teen Commits Suicide Sexting is to Blame
Jesse Logan sent nude pictures of herself to a boyfriend. When they broke up, he sent them to other high school girls. She was miserable and depressed, afraid even to go to school because of the harassment she faced from other students. Jesse tried to helps other teens, Her purpose was simple: “I just want to make sure no one else will have to go ...

Stoopid Study about Neat Houses and kids who read
Baloney! That's all women need is more pressure to spend their time scrubbing toilets. Obviously, women who have the time and inclination to keep a clean home have TIME. Time to read to their kids - time to clean the grout. If they did a study on neat houses - they'd probably also find that these houses have a higher income level with the ability ...

Re: Writing and Grieving
I'm working on the same thing. A few years ago my parents died a few months apart from one another, both unexpectedly. They'd both been decades-long close friends and inspirations to me. Between their deaths were those of my two closest and longest friends, both happening to also be musician/writers, and both dying of sudden illnesses, far too ...

One more comes to mind...
Finding Nemo terrified our two-year old, and terrified the two of us even more as we realized what was about to happen the first time we slid in the disk. Add to your list The Incredibles, which is a shoot-em-up, incredibly violent movie. At least, I think it is--after the first few minutes of gunplay, we turned it off and haven't touched it ...

My Father had Exorcisms Performed on my Mother (Long Post)
I come out of a household of similar circumstances, and it's interesting how Prudie missed the context of this person's predicament. Her advice this week was uncharacteristically (secularly) righteous, and surprisingly wrongheaded, and failed to take into account the dependence issues that arise in families with bizarre religious beliefs, as ...
