    It is an interesting thesis that we should be much more tolerant of the obese. Somehow I don't think that is going to happen in our lifetimes.

    Actually, if you read Kolata's book (noted NYT health writer-- hardly a lightweight, and the book is meticulously researched), you'll find that there aren't really very many formerly overweight people...I think the current statistics are that 95% of people will regain the weight within 5 years.
