  • There are other options

I wrote a post about this on my design blog, Strange Closets. I have switched to Phillips Halogena energy savers which are dimmable. I have some before and after photos here: http://www.strangeclosets.com/2008/03/lighting-dilemma.html

  • Stop the CFL Madness!

Boy, the hype is thick as a brick in here. I don't know who's really behind the insane rush to CFLs, but, as usual, I'm following the money. Thirty cents for an incandecent that breaks down in a landfill, vs. $5 for a CFL that needs a haz-mat crew to properly dispose of it. Swap out a few billion of them and do the math. The best rebuttal to the ...

  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs are safe

The article doesn’t mention that the efficiency of compact fluorescents is grossly overstated on the packaging. General Electric energy smart 26 watt compact fluorescent lamps actually draw, if you read the tiny print on the base, 390 milliamps, which would be 46.8 watts at 120 volts. It takes nearly 47 watts to produce the same light as a ...

  • Massive Groundwater Mercury Cleanup

Is it five years from now when the first big wave of long-lasting CFL bulbs will hit American garbage cans? I understand that it's more mercury in the air today to generate electricity for incandescents than is used in the CFL bulbs today. But our children or grandchildren will curse us and pay billions to clean-up the groundwater polluted by ...

  • Wrong technology choice

There is no doubt about the energy savings associated with CFL's. However, the recycling requirement, which will undoubedly be ignored by the vast majority of consumers, is too big of an issue to ignore. If it weren't for the huge companies pushing these products we wouldn't be having this discussion at all. The next generation of lighting is ...

  • Pushing CFL bulbs is highly irresponsible!

The Fray's pushing for CFL bulbs is a highly irresponsible, and somewhat mis-informed effort. People being what they are, most will continue to throw away CFLs in the trash, where they're broken, releasing the mercury into landfills, then runoff, ground water, and finally the oceans, where it's concentrated by the various food layers until we ...

  • Florecent Lights

Lets get over the whole CO2 nonsense which has nothing to do with global warming okay, These light bulbs are a disaster and I'm not talking mercury, I'm talking usefulness. Who in their right mind wants to walk around looking a slightly sick shade of green. If we wanted to do this we could all live in an office. They work real well with ...

  • The Case for CFL - CFL VS LED debate

Missing the real change. Jump to LED lighting and you reduce usage from CFL of 26 watts to say 10 watts or less. LED light bulbs are not as cheap as CFL yet, but they are certainly cheaper in the long run and more environmently  friendly.

  • First if its efficiency and Green its LED

The main reason to go to any new light source is efficiency in the life of the source. The most efficient light source is Fiber optic from sunlight but retrofit is highly expensive Second most effective is a thermal protected Skylight source of light In Electrical light, The Light Emitting Diode (LED) is the most cost efficient source of light ...
