Re: Song obsessions
if there is any song one should obsess about anything by mitchell it would be two. 'people's parties' & 'same situation'. they flow into one beautiful song. after this album, 'court & spark' she fell off rather quickly. here she peaked.

A Beautiful Tribute to Joni Mitchell
...and well deserved; far too often writers seem to fix on Joni's looks, rather than her staggering talent as a one of the premier singer/songwriters of a generation. Why is it so hard to accept that she's grown from that shimmering golden sylph-like ethereal presence into a mature older woman? She's aged but she's also lived, and during a time ...

Amelia and false hopes
First topic -- I've always obsessed on songs, but I have come to believe that is counterproductive to the enjoyment of music. The Replacements put it most amusingly (on their FIRST album): ''I hate music. It's got too many notes.'' The minute you think that the act of listening is bound up with the selection and repetition of a few great songs ...

Amelia & Song Obsessions
Amelia has been one of my latest song obsessions, although I have been obsessed with all of JMs work for close to 40 years. I become obsessed with Amelia (and Hejira the album) every few years. I actually just posted on my facebook page a youtube video of JM singing Amelia live from about 1986. It is an amazing performance and has brought tears ...

Re: hejira
yeah, make that +2 for ''song for sharon'' while Blue is a very beautifl and personal album, I find all of Hejira to be a little more mature musically, and even lyrically. And it defenitely benefits unknowably from having Jaco Pastorius fleshing out Joni's guitar playing. In a lot of ways, I find Hejira is to Blue as Veedon Fleece is to Astral ...

coils around feathers and talons on scales
Amelia's great, but to me Joni's ultimate travel song will always be Don Juan's Reckless Daughter with its beautiful imagery of snakes and eagles and that white-hot moment when the shadow of the airplane she flies away in crosses the shadow of the train bearing her lover away and her awareness of him is immediate and visceral: ''to me it was skin ...

Amelia
Thanks for these thoughts. The song is still fresh for me, after a solid 30 years. One of the best i ever heard. Once in a forthnight is my minimum to listen to the whole album. Of course for those not familiar with this music, a short mention could be made of the famous J.Pastorius, playing a very unique bass guitar for JM. In fact he carries ...

Literature about Music
Rosenbaum writes of ''Amelia'': ''The song could serve as the soundtrack for the novel, or the novel as recommended reading post-'Amelia.' (Indeed, what about a series of essays that pairs great novels with a playlist of kindred songs?)'' I'm happy to announce that something very much like this is currently in the works. Time's Arrow Press ...

joni mitchell songs
Mr. Rosenbaum, I think you accomplished your goal of doing justice to the inimitable Joni song, ''Amelia.'' As I an ardent admirer of her music, I very much appreciated your article. I have absolutely binged on this song in the past, and am sure to again in the future. I would just add that not only are the lyrics brilliant, as you've highlighted, ...
