What wound up being stupider are the jeans that is still fashionable wadded up all the way to the knees, a fashion that was trended from the ''shemales'' in prison. Hats used to cover unwashed hair (medieval times), then I think they were because we did not have proper heating, then I think it was to cover bald heads. Speculation on the last but ...
