Triple Crowns for all ages and sexes
I'll agree that the main problem with the TC is that it focuses on 3yo colts for a few weeks early in the year. However, I'd like to see Triple Crowns for all ages and genders promoted. Ostensibly, there's one for 3yo fillies but the racing industry doesn't hype that. Ditto the steeplechasing Triple Crown, where horses don't start until the ...

Let Them Gallop
This is hands-down THE best article about TB racing since the loss of Eight Belles at the K Derby. For those who whine about tradition (Jockey Club, breeders, trainers, etc), all I have to say is: we used to bleed people when they got sick, and it really did help. But now we know even better. When people were mentally ill, we used to drill ...

Eight Belles
Eight Belles had to be euthanized (killed) because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. We need horse racing in this country like a fish needs a bicycle.. The very idea that in the 21st Century we are still pushing animals to the breaking point so we can sip mint julips and parade in top hats and gowns is so absurd that it almost ...

Still a few railbirds at Laurel
I go to Laurel on those Saturdays when I have nothing else to do, such as fold my laundry. I go mostly to watch horses run. But whenever I go, there's still a hundred or so people. Some are clones of the characters from A Year at the Races - always older and with a cigar in their mouths. Some are middle-aged guys like myself with sense to not ...

from Aqueduct Racetrack
There is something so elemental about the narrative of a thoroughbred race. Here at the track, we are happy to lend our story lines to political reporters and LOVE seeing political campaignes couched in our jargon. Appreciated Mr. Shafer's fresh viewpoint on the topic of ''horseracism,''and would say more but it's three minutes to post time ...

They're calling the wrong race.
For those who haven't heard yet, no one gets a party nomination based on the number of states derbys they won but the number of delegates they won overall throughout the campaign. These primaries aren't races in and of themselves; they're just posts on a very long course. The media are addicted to announcing new front-runners with every ...

horse race coverage usurps voters' role
I have many problems with horse race coverage, but the biggest is how undemocratic it all is. You now have people dropping out of Presidential races because the media pronounces them nonviable candidates. You have fundraising drying up because of this. You have the media pronouncing that the winners of a particular state will have the ''momentum'' ...

Re: campaigns are not ends in themselves--that's the problem.
It may be true we like to know who's winning, but when the journalist is distilling the progress from the many, many polls and opinions that are available, he's bound to inject personal bias in his call of the race. What if he says my horse/candidate has pulled up lame, when in fact he's making up ground? Do I change my bet?

McCain as Front Runner
Who cares if you, Slate, or anyone else thinks McCain is the front runner? In the end, there is only one judgment, the voters. The news media's job is to give us the info to decide for ourselves who is best qualified. Please less of the horse race and more news reporting.
