Science and Engineer careers not compatible with motherhood
I am a woman with a masters in physical chemistry, currently working as a microelectronics engineer. I have known dozens of female scientists and engineers. The majority do not have children. Of the ones I know who do have children, they have only one. One major reason women are under-represented in these fields are the long hours and ...

Hazardous Waste in Subduction Zones
OK...If Volcanoes are not a good choice for disposing of nuclear waste, HOW ABOUT.... Disposing of hazardous waste in a geological subduction zone? In this area waste materials would sink into the earth below the volcano to be taken down in vacuum cleaner style to the crust of the earth and not to be seen but in diluted form several hundred ...

Scrims = (Undesirable) Faraday Cage?
What exactly are the dimensions of the holes, or any gaps, in the scrims being used, especially the ones in the Princeton University garage completed in 2000, which appear to surround/shield the entire sides of the structure? It appears that such scrims would serve as a Faraday cage, blocking radiofrequency (RF) signals from reaching from the ...

Re: CFC's
Danwill:Yes , the CFC based foam was far superior .First, there have been problems with foam loss since almost the beginning: http://www.astronautix.com/articles/thespace.htm Second, CFCs were replaced with HCFCs, but not for parts of the tank that are manually sprayed, which is where most of the problems are. NASA has a waiver to use CFCs in ...

Idea for shuttel foam falling problem
Instead of making the foam stronger (so they don't fall ever) why don't we make it weaker (so they don't damage anything during launch) but strong enough not to fall before launch? I am starting a wiki for this idea. http://spaceshuttlefoalfalling.wetpaint.com/ Please contribute if you are interested.

N7W: Just More Ancient Rocks. Phooey!
The New 7 Wonders of the World have been decided by popular sentiment, and I am not very Happy with the results. Strike that; I'm actually not that displeased with the results, given the fact that it was supposedly a worldwide vote done over, like, 3 years. It's the Final 21 nominees I had a problem with. Did anyone besides me notice that A) ...
