Air travel is hard to offset
The problem with air travel is that it much more polluting than driving and you go much longer distances. Most estimates say air travel produces more than half a pounds of CO2 per mile per passenger. Of course this depends on a lot of factors such as how full the plane is, but the airline industry uses cheap, dirty fuels and they are incredibly ...

Re: McCain-Palin's scientific view of oil exploration
Experts estimate that within our off-shore borders and Alaska there may be enough oil to support us for 60 more years. That should give us ample time to transition to other energy sources, especially if we begin shifting to nuclear energy. We would likely be in a good economic situation today if the Democrats had not outlawed oil drilling in ...

The Big Bailout...Ha!
There is no need for a bailout of the bank when we can bail them out through tax payer spending...heres how: America has fought hard to become an independent nation and a leader in innovation, so how can we fix our current economic downtrend efficiently? Some seem to think that throwing money at the corporations who failed us is the answer…we all ...

Re: A Response from Andrew Revkin
Beautifully stated! The science issues are: i) whether or not we have anthropogenic CO2 mediated global warming (settled in the affirmative); ii) what the magnitude and varied impacts of this warming will be (not settled). The complementary policy issue is what - if anything - should be done about this. As a layman, I'd be happy to restrict my ...

Business Innovation
I think that one of the greatest steps toward improving our environment is increasing the individuals sense of responsibility toward it. One of the best ways we can do this is by supporting innovative businesses that not only provide us with our desired utility but also benefit the environment. For example, I came across a website ...

Regarding the Wall-E article...
''Wall-E tells us that if we don't change the way we live, we'll all get really fat and destroy the world.'' You'll find no bigger supporter of the first amendment than me. However, I think the statement above, quoted from the article is a little biased. To me, it sounds like someone who is just looking for a reason to look down on ...

Hybrids, not as good a move as you think
Before you go out and buy a hybrid you may want to look into turning your current vehicle into a hybrid. In recent years many advances have been made towards using hydrogen in conventional gas burning engines. While some ideas seem to have been made by crack pot hippies or your neighbor experimenting in his garage some ideas will actually work. ...

Don't dismiss solar - solar systems w/batteries do work 24/7
The article is correct in pointing out that no country, not even France, has a long-term solution to the problem of nuclear waste, and that the problem is significant. Thus, nuclear energy cannot be embraced as a solution to the problem of greenhouse gases, much as we all long for a solution. The article is _not_ correct in implying that ...

How much energy used to manufacture a CFL?
I too have experienced poor performance from the cheap CFL bulbs sold in multi-packs from Lowes and Home Depot that most people likely buy... they only last 6 months to a year. Using retail price as a proxy for manufacturing costs suggests that CFLs are more expensive to produce, and ultimately use more energy to manufacture, than incandescent ...
