No Teacher Left Behind? Not so in Pennsylvania
Figured that I'd share this article with everybody:Originally posted on MonkeyPundit.com According to its Department of Education's estimates, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has a projected shortage of more than 12,000 teachers. This alarming statistic is exacerbated by Pennsylvania's Teacher Recruitment Bureaucracy. Due to under staffing ...

KEEP BABY'S BRAIN GREEN
Baby's brain is a complex environment that requires care. Baby is pre-wired to soak up what he/she needs to develop . Messing around with these ecology is at best pointless and at worst harmful, especially in the hands of merchandisers. The Disney refund story is incredibly positive news in the world of ...

diminishing returns for charter schools
Kaus, while charter schools seem promising, don't forget that their main advantage is their selectivity. Even the ones without academic and discipline requirements often have ''selectivity'' because they only accept students who apply months in advance of the start of school. In cities like Chicago, that makes a big difference. Therefore, as the ...

Boomers Smoking
I agree with the Dr.'s post previous to mine. I believe that each of us has a right to do what we think is best for us. I believe marijuana has many medicinal uses and that this slight risk is less than most presciption medications on the market. Look at the side effects of some of these meds and tell me would you rather take them or smoke ...

Re: It IS a parents duty to put his/her kids interests first!
I generally agree with sullivan. Bazelon's tone seems vague to me: I can't tell if she is criticizing parents who attempt to influence classroom placement where the school forbids it or if she is criticizing any attempt to do so regardless of what the school allows. The comments about ''zero sum gain'' seem to suggest the latter: ''your kid ...

Shame on Obama -- wanting to help children!
''If you can't respect the man, respect the office.'' Oh, wait, that's last year's truth. This year's truth is that the president doesn't deserve our respect, that he's out to corrupt our children. How? Why, by telling them he is trying to fix the leaky roofs, the broken desks, the text books that are falling apart, the computers that have ...

Bazelon's Strong Premise Is Unsubstantiated
Apart from the premise, there is not a lot of good I can find in this article. I agree with Ms. Bazelon - surely helicopter parents meddling in the affairs of their child(ren)'s school(s) is a very bad idea. However, the rest of the article does not support the premise very well. For starters, ''combinations of kids they're building'' makes ...

Americans and their Education
The piece is pretty accurate, but unfortunately, I think Palin's lack of education attribute to her demise just as much as the ''lost in translation'' idea. Like most Americans, we are not very articulate, especially at the national level. Although she went to college, her level of understanding the world is pretty narrow, as is her development ...

Game Builiding for Kids
Folks interested in this subject might want to explore Stagecast (http://stagecast.com/) and AgentSheets (http://agentsheets.com/). And the latest (or one of the latest) generation of Logo is Starlogo (http://education.mit.edu/starlogo/). I've put a panel proposal in to South by Southwest Interactive on game development environments for kids. ...

The 20% Rule
As an academic scientist, I have noticed (totally anecdotally, no formal study, but one should be done) that science departments with no women - most often departments such as physics, geology, computer science - are desperate to hire women. The few women coming up for positions in those fields have to beat back offers, because universities know ...
