Good Rappers, Lame Rockers
A good point I hadn't considered before. The Aerosmith/Run DMC collaboration was the one that introduced me to DMC, it being really forward thinking considering the musically regressive area that I lived in. The one that REALLY opened my ears, and that the author didn't mention, was Anthrax/Public Enemy doing 'Bring the Noise'. Run DMC was good, ...

White_Rabbit weighs in on Culturebox...
MaryAnn:this sharp, witty and instructive Culturebox article by Robert Pinsky -- http://www.slate.com/id/2189318/ You're joking, right? Sharp? Witty? Instructive? How about inconsistent, evasive, and ultimately needlessly insulting? If that last bit was meant to be witty, then it was in exceedingly poor taste. Mr. Pinsky reminds me of a ...

His nickname is King James
That's it -- there's no way to miss the comparison to King Kong. But nobody called Peter Jackson racist for remaking the movie a couple of years ago. If it's a shock that Vogue might use a little sexual frisson to sell magazines, then think again. Surely, in this case, racism is in the eye of the beholder.

my so-called quarterlife as a twentysomething
To begin: I am in the twenty-something age bracket myself, but I find nothing fulfilling, interesting, or even sympathetic in QL. This is likely related to the way that the content of the internet is often shaped by its users. We fill it with information, then choose what information to consume. I suppose there may have been a dearth of weepy, ...

synchronicity
has anyone else noted how nicely this dovetails with Saturday's Undercover Economist, ''How Facebook Is Like Ikea They get their customers to do the work—and to enjoy doing it.''? http://www.slate.com/id/2182149/

Noted art critic gives his Important and Meaningful analysis
Mia Fineman:If a child can make great abstract paintings, does this mean that modern art is itself a hoax, a high-culture con game? Gee. Ya think? Mia Fineman:When people look at abstract paintings and say, ''My kid could do that,'' they're right—up to a point. Given the right materials and a little bit of coaching, any kid—or elephant or ...

Marla Paints
The conclusion of this article is that Pollack's paintings are ''art'' because he decided that they were, and thus ''Pollock taught us how to see art in a new way.'' Nowhere does Ms. Fineman dare to say that she can tell the difference from a ''Marla'' or an elephant painting from a Pollack. Suppose Ms. Fineman were shown a group of paintings and ...

Re: Harry's peers are standing in line today
Correction to the previous correction: The original article states, ''I met Harry when he was 13 and I was 15. The third book had been released a few months earlier, and Lindsey, my best friend, had pressed the first one on me, saying I would love it.'' The way I read this, the author was saying that the fictional Harry was 13 when the third book ...

too cheap a shot at Disney/Pixar
Dan Kois' piece on straight to dvd sequels is way to easy. I'll accept that to some viewers the sequels won't match their awful reputation. What I don't understand is why the new Disney/Pixar collaboration should take the fall for the CG crap that others studios are churning out these days. Shrek, Over The Hedge, Ice Age are obviously no match for ...
