  • The Armed forces as a path to citizenship?

I wonder if this idea is politically tenable? Or if would be effective in replenishing the army before the next president (probably) starts to draw down troops. But how about offering enlistment in the armed forces as a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants in the United States who want to take up the offer. Of course, they would get all ...

  • Iraq: Failure, mistake, or Success?

Much has been stated about the fact that we were wrong to enter Iraq. That success is measured by how quickly we can get out of Iraq. Consider this: Iraq is in the heart of what most extremist Muslims consider holy ground. By attacking Iraq we attacked the heart of what the extremist Muslim holds dear. They have responded in force. Millions of ...

  • Recruitment Solution: The Draft

I was in the service from 1968-72 and we had no shortage of qualified troops back then. Of course, this was made possible by the draft. Enlisted personnel at that time were an interesting mix of high school grads, college types, and some drop-outs from all over the US. This diversity of cultures and skill sets enriched the talent pool back then ...

  • Military Incentives: So What? Everyone else does it.

So what? The Military offers incentives during times when it is hard to find someone willing to take on combat duties. A) They have been doing it long before the Iraq war often offering bonuses and special enlistment packages geared toward specific MOS's (Military Occupational Specialties). B) Every other career field works the same. When ...

  • Complete? I don't think so.

All things considered the title of this article is really misleading. The information provided paints a very broad picture of what is going on, but it is in no way ''complete'' and the article itself not all that helpful or informative. There are all sorts of qualifications that are not specified and the repeated use of the weasel words that ...

  • Enlistment Incentives

The draft would be a much more equitable and more economical way to obtain the needed force. No deferments, just screening and placement in appropriate jobs within the military. Increase the base pay and benefits and quit playing around with poor kids lives for money.

  • Re: Military Draft

When there is talk about reviving the draft, history comes to mind. Americans have generally opposed a military draft except in cases of a direct threat to the nation. Even during the Civil War there was opposition as in the New York draft riots. I suspect part of the reason is that the selection process has not been uniformly applied. During the ...

  • Conscription

As someone who has served in the military, allow me to say that many people in the Armed Forces are scared of the idea of conscription, or required service after high school. I was honestly surprised with some of the people who made it through boot camp and beyond that volunteered. I, and others, are frightened of the idea of all high school ...

  • mercenary soldiers

If the choice is between conscription and continuing down the path toward mercenary soldiers, conscription is the better option. Admittedly, being an old guy, that's easy for me to day. But the recent lurch toward ''contractors'' is ominous and disturbing. History offers no examples where reliance on mercenary soldiers leads to a strong nation, ...

  • Another choice

Providing the cannon fodder to maintain an empire is a long range impossibility for a democracy. Even the Romans couldn't do it, so they hired barbarian mercenaries to do the dirty work. Of course, that resulted in a bunch of new citizens who brought along wives, children, grandparents, aunts and uncles. The character of Roman civilization was ...
