    The Chinese government actively encourages it's people to smoke ( from NPR). If you get cancer over there it's a death sentence unless you're rich. Why not ask them?

    ''Media'' is the plural form of ''medium'', so ''Are The Media Being Too Mean To China?'' is perfectly correct. Granted, ''media'' is most often used, not to mean a group of communication outlets, but the profession or industry as a single collective whole. But if you're going to be all pedantic and nitpicky, ''are the media...'' is correcter, ...
