''Media'' is the plural form of ''medium'', so ''Are The Media Being Too Mean To China?'' is perfectly correct. Granted, ''media'' is most often used, not to mean a group of communication outlets, but the profession or industry as a single collective whole. But if you're going to be all pedantic and nitpicky, ''are the media...'' is correcter, ...

A note on tipping
The author was absolutely right about the no tipping. Unfortunately, there were always some lao wai with expense accounts being an ass and spoiling the workers with tips. When the bosses and managers at these establishments got a wind of this tipping concept, some started charging a 10% ''Service fee'' on top of your bill. That money IS NOT GOING ...
