The Coming Charity Crisis
The article by Daniel Gross presents an example of the thoughtless use of numbers that is rampant in journalism (but certainly not limited to journalists). Mr. Gross says, ''Charitable giving in 2006 was $295.2 billion, according to Giving USA 2006, about 2.2 percent of gross domestic product. For comparison's sake, Wal-Mart has annual sales of ...

Suggestion for Alum
Apparently you have fantastic taste in clothes - why else would your friend be so insistant? Here's a suggestion so the shelter won't get shorted: Have your friend go through her clothing as well, and set aside everything in good condition that she's outgrown, dislikes, or doesn't wear any more. Take those, along with those items of yours she ...

National boarders cause poverty
I have always though that national boarders cause poverty, by restricting the movement of people we are essentially allowing slave labor type conditions in third world countries if first world countries would allow unlimited immigration from third world countries, wages in rich countries would ease down while the wages of people in poor countries ...

Charity, Giving and Scouting
I wholeheartedly agree with the person who does not wish to donate to organizations to which she is diametrically opposed. A simple ''No - I really can't do that...'' will suffice. A former coworker did not want to give to a particular medical fund I was collecting for some years back, on the grounds that the medical research being done was ...

Brother can you spare a dime?
White man on a street corner with his hand out saying ''brother can you spare a dime'' with Obama walking by chin up fist in his pocket a hand waving negatively towards the guy and dismissively, Michelle three steps behind and their kids all following chin up and a smug look on their faces. Obama replying : ''who are you callin` brother!'' ...

The Facebook challenge
As someone who participated in the Facebook Causes challenge (I recruited about 30 donors to Love Without Boundaries), I can say I think these things absolutely work, and here's why: 1. Cost. An online challenge costs the charity nothing. LWB heard about the challenge and signed up. That's all -- every other bit of the fundraising was done by ...

You're more wrong than Cosby
So you guys have a twist on this. OK, I'm sure that based on your methodology you are right. Now - how does this serve the black community? Bill Cosby is trying to help lower income black families understand some of the mechanics of their situation. Your study results imply that it is OK to feel good if you forgoe some necessities such ...
