  • Missing the point on e-book readers

You make three main points against buying e-book readers: 1. The cost is too high for most people to recoop their initial investment 2. There is a ''format war'' going on that could make your choosen reader obsolete 3. Apples table could revolutionize the market like the ipod did to mp3 players. Unfortunately you left out important ...

  • Wu Has Not Grasped Publishing Economics

Wu has a lot right here, but ignoring (or ignorance of) current publishing economics causes him to favor an outcome less beneficial to authors than it needs to be. Most out-of-print (OP) books are tied to old publishing economics built on economies of scale requiring a pubisher to print at least a thousand offset copies of an older book in ...

  • The Max I Know

(warning: some movie spoilers included in this post but it is not really a movie review) I went to the AMC-Imax to see the new Spike Jonze film, and was quite taken with the story adaptation as well as the beautiful costumes and the luscious scenery. If you don’t know the story, young Max is confronted with lots of changes in his life as ...

  • Amazon's remote deletion of e-books

As an independent publisher of e-books I had always had the impression that the Kindle e-books were intended to be kept by the buyer, just in the same way that print books are. It was not until the lawsuit that I found out about the ''leasing'' arrangement. In the face of piracy issues and other problems with copyright and infringement, it is ...

  • Google settlement

I would like to see the new Settlement require permission from all rights owners before all or large parts of a work are displayed or sold. Anything less guarantees unintended consequences. For example, the Berne Convention would be contravened, and we would automatically become a rogue nation on that front. Since IP is one of our major exports ...

robwriter:After all, are all straights really straight? And BTW, if the human race is headed for extinction, it will be due to overpopulation, not gays.[After all, are all straights really straight? Of course they are, otherwise they would have been gays, just like you!] As for this bizarre idea [if the human race is headed for extinction, it ...

  • After all, are all gays really gay?

Well, I looked at the definition of the word ''gay'' in a dictionary and found that this word is the adjective of the noun ''gaiety'' which means: cheerfulness; Merrymaking; festivity; finery; showy brightness. ... Do you mean every gay is by nature really gay? Hadn't been for women we would have been subjected to extinction.

  • Always good to see Judith Shulevitz here.

Thanks for a great review. I've never read William Trevor, but now I'm going to have to start.

  • Stumped

Dear Stumped, There's a pretty good book called It's Okay to Be the Boss: The Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming the Manager Your Employees Need by Bruce Tulgan. It may help you understand how to emphasize the positive while still making your expectations clear. Once things become threatening and confrontational, the battle is all but over. ...
