  • Hitchens

There's no greater waste of time than arguing with a drunken ignoramus such as Hitchens. The second greatest waste of time is reading his defense of his stupidity.

  • Thomas Eagleton and ECT

One very sad case was that of Senator Thomas Eagleton, chosen as a running mate by George McGovern, the Democratic Party’s nominee for President in 1972. Within a week, disaster struck: when reports of Eagleton’s hospitalizations threatened to break in the press, the campaign came forward and admitted to Eagleton’s treatments for exhaustion. ...

  • Disease semantics

Has anyone bothered to look up the definition of the word disease? It's pretty broad. Anyone that has ever experienced an addiction knows that it is not a mere habit. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people ''helping'' addicts who have no idea what it is really like.

  • Definition of Disease; Stigma

That's the Wikipedia entry on disease. Alcoholism fits the definition quite well. We are biological organisms, and our motivations are rooted in biology. ...

  • Addiction is not a choice

To say that addicts have choices about whether to go to an AA meeting or stay home and do the dishes does not address the real question. No one chooses to be an addict, any more than they would choose to have cancer. Those who are afflicted with the disease cannot choose to have a social drink or two, or to use cocaine recreationally now and ...

  • Addiction as disease

The definition of disease is quite slippery, and changes over time. Did you know that medical science once recognized an illness called ''drapetomania'', the inexplicable desire of slaves to run away from their owners? Or that there is no definitional characteristic that you can give for the term ''disease'' that would not cover pregnancy as ...

  • Re: Addiction As Brain Disorder Makes Sense

You make the best sense. And if shame was so compelling, why don't more people respond to it? Evantually it may be that science tells us to back away from the disease model too, but it is still a step in the right direction to move away from the previous perception. Taking some of the emotional weight out of the addiction equation frees the ...
