  • Surprisingly flimsy piece

Wow, what a bad piece. Rovell bases his conclusion -- that Tiger's injury will only minimally hurt sales of the products and services he endorses -- largely on is personal opinion about what consumers do or do not respond to. Note the following quote: ''I've found that the most expensive item people will buy from a sports endorsement is ...

  • With kids this good... How could you not?

Of course it will be a while before this kid is on the pro tour; however. A much better swing than Tiger was at 4years old, and he is only 19 Months old. Amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coHZUVBuxfI

  • Toddler Golf Pro... Next Tiger Woods??

Woods has nothing on this kid! Comparatively better swing than Tiger at his age. Possibly the best form I've ever seen in a Child Golf Prodigy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coHZUVBuxfI Simply amazing. Apparently there's some video out there of him winning a child 'driving' tournament. His putting ability is supposed to be just as good. ...

  • "His only point of reference ..."

''... is himself.'' So said Charles Hatton in the Daily Racing Form about Secretariat. The same can be said of Tiger Woods. Two great players can make for a great rivalry. Some greats, though, have no contemporary equal and hence lead to the what-if's seen all over the media. Tiger Woods v. Jack Nicklaus. Secretariat v. Man o'War. ...

  • Actually, Tiger has increased the quality of Tour players

Although it's an interesting hypothesis that Tiger has lowered the quality of play on the PGA Tour, I would argue the opposite -- since Tiger has arrived, players have had to elevate their games to be competitive. I remember not so long ago that many of the golfers were waaay out of shape, whereas now nearly all of them are on a fitness routine. ...

  • The "dismal" science

Oh, Wahh! What a sniveling, self-pitying outlook. There will always be someone head and shoulders above everyone else in a particular field. In sports, look at Navritilova and Jordan in their prime. Deal with it and move on.

  • Re: There is a better, more likely explanation

I agree, although I think it's not so much that they try HARDER, but that they try DIFFERENTLY. The adopt strategies with higher risk and higher expected scores because of the need for a higher reward in order to beat Tiger. It's loosely analagous to playing an NCAA pool with a million people. If you always pick according to the seeds, you're ...

  • Re: Really?

Once upon a time there was a horse called Secretariat. The five races he lost (of 21 starts) weren't due to better horses -- there were none -- nor to equally good horses -- again, there were none. No, his losses were due mostly to miscommunication and poor planning among his connections, which led to his rare lapses in concentrating. Usually, ...
