  • Re: Real Debate

Your comment conflates 'religion' w/ 'culture.' Not all cultures are religious, or ''clothed in allegories and myths'' that people treat as non-fiction. Examples of non-religious cultures: secular Judaism; the culture of any secular institution (e.g. your local public university, Google). Non-religious cultures may include myths, but the myths ...

  • You are in my Prayers

I read your article, ''What I've learned from debating religious people around the world'' with fascination. To provide you with some insight I am what is commonly called an evangelical Christian, but could not be accurately labeled as a full Calvinist. I try my best to communicate in a manner that saves others from perdition and I likewise strive ...

  • Only a theory??? Sad state of scientific education.

People with little or no understanding of scientific inquiry frequently misunderstand the nature of scientific theories. Evolution is a scientific theory and that is not pejorative. It simply means that experimental results can be predicted and tested. As soon as someone conducts a test that refutes a theory, it must be revised or discarded. ...

  • The Drapers' Religion

From the start I've wondered about the lack of religious activities in the Draper household. The contrast of the Drapers' non-observance (other than Christmas and Easter) contrasted with Carla's weekly participation noted in the last episode. I can understand Don's antipathy given his childhood but Betty was probably raised as an observant ...

  • Donald Trump for NIH Director

Ok, I believe that Collin's administrative skills are great. But if we just look at administrative skills, then is he the best person for the job? Maybe Donald Trump should be considered. Or, maybe we want a skilled administrator who is also a scientist who we can trust not be biased against pursuing legitimate scientific questions.

  • Rabbis trafficking organs

Religion continues to be abused. There was a famous dialogue in an old Indian movie, ironically it was called ''yahudi'' where a Jew argues with the Roman empire and says '' your blood is blood and mine is water?'' Whether it is Judaism, Islam, Christianity, HInduism or Buddhism, the self appointed loud mouthed guardians of religions talk about ...

  • Scientific Laws

William Saletan says this: ''Natural selection has become a tremendous tool for understanding biology. But it wasn't the first kind of science we invented, and it won't be the last.'' Natural Selection is usually seen as a theory rather than a tool. Theories are useful for understanding aspects of the facts and combinations of facts that ...

  • Hypocrisy and contradiction.

Most religions passionately revere faith and commitment in their followers. However deep within the tenets of these religions there is also supposed to be a reverence for the follower who shuns all earthly wealth and possessions and devotes himself solely to the growth of the church and the spreading of the doctrine. If this were really true ...

  • This is not a scientific theory

Science is empirical. Scientific theories must be testable and capable of being disproved by facts. We can never know what the inter-tribal range of religious opinion was in paleolithic times. We can never know whether less religious tribes (if there were any) were less socially cohesive, or whether social cohesion determined which tribes ...
