Slumdog Stars Still Living in Poverty
The rags-to-riches love story, 'Slumdog Millionaire', may have cleaned up at this year's Oscars, but its child stars continue to live in poverty back home.Slumdog Stars Still Living in Poverty

The Pope of Greenwich Village
Since being nominated for an Oscar, I've seen lots of articles regarding the career of Mickey Rourke. The movies always mentioned are the same. But before Diner, before 9 1/2 Weeks, before Angel Heart, before Barfly there was The Pope of Greenwich Village. This film is an underrated gem that no one seems to remember anymore. For me, this is ...

Must see Diner
Great article. Being a younger guy, I haven't seen Diner but the popcorn clip has made me want to rent it for the weekend. Rourke will probably lose this year's Oscar to Sean Penn but his performance in the Wrestler really impressed me. If his role as Boogie in Diner is half as good, I must see it.

Oscars are for Corporate Enterprise more than Art
Perhaps I am reflecting the egalitarian teaching of some former art teacher, or the philosophy of Joyce Cary in Art and Reality, but I cringe at the notion that aesthetic beauty can be ranked, like those in a race. Carr is indeed a smart and legit journalist who covers many topics (politics, journalism, media, music, movies). But his Carpetbagger entries are fun and occasionally brilliant as well. His video blogs and reports strike a perfect pitch between 1) ...

Since when are decisions about awarding Oscars based on the subject matter? Is there a ''Worst Holocaust Movie Ever'' category? Vincent Schodolski

Slumdog Millionaire
Slumdog is not a documentary on India's poverty and so doesn't have to follow the rules of fact. It's a movie, an art form, and only has to be true to itself in whatever manifestation it chooses. I've seen the movie twice and have enjoyed it more than any movie I've seen in a very long time. Yes, it falls into cliches from time to time but the ...

No Country, Cormac, and awards
It's tricky to predict what movies people care about. It's easier with books and even music: people tend to *love* those more than they love current films. Still, it's interesting to think about what moves tend to garner awards and which ones do not. I agree that No Country will likely win Best Picture, but even that is a bizarre reality ...
