New Yorker and dates: so what?
I really don't get the point of the article. All the examples given are about real events that happened at real times and, yes, the citation of dates do in fact give the reader an anchor in a sea of information that is a typically comprehensive New Yorker non-fiction piece. Honestly, I don't see how one would explain current or historical events ...

Satire Free New Yorker
Jim Borgman's cartoon linking the current contretemps about the Obama cover of the New Yorker to the great Steinberg New Yorker's view of America is brilliant. If only the New Yorker itself could run it as its next cover. I'm mostly with Jon Stewart in regarding this whole business as much ado about (mostly) nothing, and a suitable object of ...

New Yorker Cover
If you think the New Yorker cover is rephrehensible because it may further burn hateful stereotypes into the brains of even well-meaning people, then you really don't understand satire. Satire is all about ridiculing the stupidity, insanity and ugliness of the world, but not by wagging a finger and saying ''tsk, tsk'' in great earnestness, but by ...

Re: The New Yorker Cover
Um, did I say 'unfair'? Nope. I don't give a darn about fair, and fairness is not the point of my criticism. We are in a war for the life of the constitution of this country. If this election goes to the republicans, abortion rights are over. The illusion of judicial independence is over. Any hope this country has of regaining its stature as any ...

The New Yorker's cover illustrations of the Obamas
I find it hard to believe that editors at the New Yorker were so pure of intention: just make a joke about the absurd statements circulating about the Obamas. Certainly, someone at the New Yorker must have realized that the cover could cause controversy. And, as we all know, controversy sells. With media images transported around the world in ...

Missing the point
Jack styles himself a shrewd character and seems to think the reaction to the cover art is overblown. What he fails to realize is that it will appeal to those with simple minds that will never see it as satire, but rather as a reality check. Is that the fault of the magazine? Rather than being at fault, they are responsible. Is there a price ...

This odd 'reverse satire' is the problem
Not sure how to term this ('reverse parody/satire') or if it's a valid criticism (comments?) but in thinking about what's misguided/ineffective in the cartoon, it occurred to me that the parody attempted here is 'backwards' from the 'norm' in such efforts, to wit: In the typical political cartoon, things are EXAGGERATED because of and to ...

Re: "Rah, rah, sis boom bah!"
Lunesta:No, you're not ''required'' to read anything, jeqal. Getting to be a darn long thread at this point, anyway. Best, ''L.'' p.s. do you get The New Yorker Magazine by any chance? If so, what did you think of last week's cover on BO? Thanks because ummmm I do glance through them, but there is only so much female criticism I can ...

MySpace Suicide
Recently read Lauren Collins' article on the MySpace suicide hoax, Did anyone else notice how hard was she was trying not to lapse into a condescending tone? The behavior of the parents matched the children in it's cruelty and inanity. To me it seemed as though the writer was struggling to portray the hoax in some light that didn't make it seem ...
