Doesn't anyone watch old movies?
Gone with the Wind: Charles Hamilton, the clumsy oaf, never had to contend with measles at Twelve Oaks, but he had to contend with it in the Confederate Army and it made Scarlett O'Hara a widow. Queen: The diptheria going around that killed at least one person on the plantation.... You all want to go back to the good old days of pre-vaccination? ...

Spoilers
Slate! I love you but why can't you give spoiler alerts??? Today's article about Lars von Trier could have included one (not a fan of that director but still), and Dana Stevens often includes spoilers in her movie reviews, which, considering their purpose, are mostly read by people who have not yet seen the movie. A fear of spoilers is the reason ...

The Max I Know
(warning: some movie spoilers included in this post but it is not really a movie review) I went to the AMC-Imax to see the new Spike Jonze film, and was quite taken with the story adaptation as well as the beautiful costumes and the luscious scenery. If you don’t know the story, young Max is confronted with lots of changes in his life as ...

This film suggests we had terrorists and hijackers B4 9/11?
Sad but true. Americans and the world have been ''taken for a ride'' by paranoid, militaristic, foolish Nation State Governments and our political ''leaders'' including the latest, Barack Obama, who continue to insist on the necessity of continued warfare against ''Terrorism'' when this film about the German Baader Meinhoff Complex proves and ...

Tired of trendy kid advice
Used APPROPRIATELY, a large playpen is a safe way to provide mom with an hour. I raised 4 kids and used a playpen. Each is an avid reader. They did well in school and were/are creative. But, I did not have the kids live in there all day- that would be neglect. I'd set it up outside and put toys in it. I'd get the yard work done for 1 1/2 hours. ...

I will pay to see this movie just to get a glimpse of Rachel McAdams - naked or not.

Just the tip of the iceburg.
I've developed a passing interest in box office receipts since I saw them in the Friday paper one August back in 1995. The next week, when I saw the new figures, I became hooked. Some months later, when getting on to the internet was still a new thing for me (hey, it was 1995), I looked up the all-time figures to get a framework for the movies ...

To Ms. Stevens
Simply put, you are the most inept and inane movie reviewer I have ever read. Why you were ever hired by Slate to write for them is beyond my comprehension. After the horror of experiencing your written work, I thought I would give you a chance by listening to you on the Cultural Gabfest, only to realize that you are even more ridiculous when ...

In defense of director's cuts/extended editions
The pervailing arguments seem to be coming down firmly against the trend of extended DVD releases so I thought I would weigh in. To preface I'm sure a lot of the examples I give here will be met with scorn from the hardcore cinema crowd. I call myself a modern cinema buff in that I watch 1-2 movies every week but make little to no effort to delve ...

How many balloons would it take?
It is a movie meant to entertain children for goodness sake!!! Why must it be picked apart & analyzed? Life is serious enough. Have the adults completely forgotten how to get lost in the fantasy just for the sake of having fun? So sad for them.
