quick and easy characterization
Nowadays, I think authors of books intended to become blockbuster movies should just save everyone time by using the name of the desired actor in the text of the book itself. Think how efficient this would be: ''He had broad shoulders and muscular arms, like Vin Diesel. His bald head was offset by his large nose, firm chin and piercing eyes, ...

Too cute by half
This article was too cute by half. The Segway is a novel and useful transitional mode of personal transport that need more terrain to cover in cities around the world. I was particularly disappointed when Las Vegas did not instantly adopt them for its vast stretches of sidewalk and casino floor, where my legs wear out long before my money does. ...

Cain, not Chandler
I believe Mr. Phipps (and Alan Moore for that matter) will find that it was James M. Cain who made the quip about Hollywood and his books, not Chandler.

Michael Moore DOES speak the truth
I have known Michael Moore since he was a child and I Can tell you from living in Flint, Michigan myself, the stories speak for themselves and so does Mr. Moore. His movies are timeless and challenge the statu quo, plus prove beyond a shadow of a doubt how this country is less of a democracy and more of a socialist state. Bush IS corrupt, and a ...

Lena Olin as a Jewess? What a joke!
Ever notice that Hollywood often chooses Aryan types to play Jews? Of course, there's a wide range of physical characteristics among Jews as Jewish semitic blood mixed with European blood over the centuries. But, Olin-as-Jewess is just too funny. It would be like casting Bette Midler as the model of Nazi Aryanism. Olin looks even more Aryan than ...

Other Auteurs
A smallish quibble with one of the points made herein; Kaufman, while undoubtedly a member of a very small club of Hollywood writer-auteurs, is not the *only* member. A David Mamet film is known as such no matter who directed; ditto Aaron Sorkin.

Hollywood wants to teach my kid to read?
Good! I learned to read with early readers and comic books. Comic books have a much more sophisticated vocabulary (scientific and historical and mythological terminology abound) than most kid's fiction and the books are much more exciting than most ''literature.''

This Is Absolutely Fascinating
I never even heard about anything like this before. I guess it makes sense for the governments to embrace the most lucrative, economy-boosting ventures possible over the more meager ones. I just finished reading about basic film financing on another site, but this is just eye-opening. Thanks for the insights. -K

Reluctantly, I agree
Although a full-fledged member of the green bandwagon who promotes green products, I have to agree with your assessment of Planet Green. I turned it on the first day it aired, hoping for evidence that environmentalism was making a successful push into the mainstream, but only lasted an hour. I turned it off after hearing a beautiful actress ...
