A post-"No Country" comedy
I emphasize with your review, I would have been just as negative if I discussed the movie right after seeing it, at a screening. After seeing the trailer, I thought the Coens' would yet again follow one of their critically successful thrillers with a zany, nonsensical, off-the-wall, immediately critically panned, but destine-to-be-cult-classic ...

Re: I somewhat agree with Dana here
Wow, you think Apocalypto is exceedingly well-crafted? I would say that's a surprise but the fact that you didn't find a deeper meaning in No Country means you lack the ability to accurately process stimuli. After laughing my way through the exploitive and unrelenting action sequences, I watched the ''special features'' on the dvd to ridicule ...

Re: NIHILIST MASTERPIECE... others?
Camus isn't a nihilist, he's an existentialist even though he tried to deny that. Existentialism comes in many forms but the basic philosophy...as I see it...is that each individual is responsible for his or her actions since there is no god to dole out punishment or reward. Re: Movies that matter???
Exactly! Which movies matter, what is it about them that matters? What on earth does it mean for a movie to ''matter''? If you're going to toss off a categorical condemnation like that one, and you don't offer at least a few standards and objectives, you underestimate any reader who matters.

The one Coen brothers movie that will remain "relevant"...
is ''The Big Lebowski''. It's the gift that keeps on giving. Most all of their movies are wonderful, so I could care less if they're considered ''relevant''. But the only one of them I actually own is ''Lebowski''. And I suspect 30 years from now people will still be watching it. My God though, ''Blood Simple'', ''Raising Arizona'', ...

Cult?
This review sounds as if Ms. Stevens didn't like the film simply because she doesn't like the Coen Bros. It's a bad break that she was assigned the movie, i guess. But saying Cormac McCarthy and the Coens have a ''cult'' following feels incredibly condescending, especially in the latter case. (They have, after all, won an Oscar and the Cannes ...
