What Do Pope John Paul II and Hugh Hefner Have in Common?
I am not Catholic, nor a scholar of Pope John Paul's ''Theology of the body.'' But that West puts Hugh Hefner and John Paul II together as advocates of overcoming sexual shame shows, to me, that he misunderstands both of them. I'm not convinced that Hefner thinks sex is good, in contradistinction to the 'Puritans' who think that sex is bad: ...

Re: A better question would be, why is celibacy so important?
kait:The argument shouldn't be: should priests be celibate, but why? As a non-Catholic agnostic, I wonder if the logic behind the maintenance of the medieval institution of celibacy is the following: In jurisprudence, there is a rule that says ''ultra posse nemo obligatur''. You should not be asked to do or not to do that is impossible to you. ...

Re: Jesus H Christ
''Is this really as important as doing unto others as you would have them do unto you?''Yes. Under a heresy as familiar as Calvinism, ''do unto others as you would have them do unto you'' is outright rejected: the Calvinists teach that God created two types of people, the elect, who he would bless with prosperity and good luck in this life, and ...

God Bless Google
Blogging the 12 Days of Christmas has bumped my google rating from a 4 to a 5. I didn't realize till just last year that the song was an allegory...a mnemonic for young catholic children... I could only imagine the mess 23 birds and 50 hormonal, young guests would make, especially in the days before the pill...and with only 5 wedding bands ...

Wow -- What a Rant by "Rage Boy" Chris Hitch Today
I am perfectly content, really quite happy, about Obama's decision to have this mega-Church author, pastor, and cultural figure, Rick Warren, give the prayer at the January 20th Inauguration of our new United States President. I understand the apoplexy of ''Rage Boy'' Christopher Hitchens at the very thought of a prayer being said, let alone a ...

the Un Caped Crusader Explainer
Would the Slate Editorial Staff care to run an Explainer on why the Slate Editorial Staff would want to give the Un-Caped Crusader a forum? It appears to be a not so subtle grab for a lead headline to drive traffice. We know business is down, but seriously, where's the backbone. Not only was he unsuccessful as a Governor, husband, father, ...

Symbosium on Religious Life at Stonehill
Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., hosted a ''Symbosium on Religious Life: Reclaiming the Treasure'' Sept. 27 with more than 600 religious attending. Cardinal Rode, the Vatican prefect for religious life, delivered a very tough address, as did a number of speakers. The conference was an attempt to examine what happened in the last 40 years to ...

Well, That's Good News for Dems and Catholics Both
I did not need to read this article, to take immediate notice when 1) Gov. Casey's Son spoke at the Democratic Convention this year, in contrast to the first Bill Clinton Convention in 1992; and 2) Joe Biden was picked to join this 2008 Ticket with Obama. Both were welcome developments to me, and I have the sensitivities on these pro-Abort ...

Re: Is The Media Bias? Here is Evidence of Bias
Media bias is a perceived notion that certain press has and is pushing a viewpoint, instead of reporting news or airing programs in an objective way. That is the way I see it. Such bias often refers to media as a whole, such as a newspaper chain, or a given television or radio network, instead of individual reporters or writers of television ...

Re: The GOP clashes with catholic views
The more I hear from Obama the more I know I could note vote for him. The next president needs to appoint jusdges that do not legislate from the bench that is why we still have thoses terrable aqbortions. Yes, I am a Roman Catholic but the very thought of abortion gives me the chills, not because I am Catholic but because those little babies ...
