Please President Robert Mugabe is not a terroras he is been portrayed. Mugabe is just like other African leaders. What did Mugabe do that other have not been doing? In Nigeria did Obasanjo win any election for tenures in office? What did the Western naions do? Did the present leaders in African nations win elections what did the Western ...

Why don't we hear more about Equatorial Guinea?
In the 90's Robert Klitgaard's Tropical Gangsters described the poverty and corruption that existed before the oil boom. 60 Minutes has also shown the abuse of public funds by poltical leaders and their cronies. I agree that the oil, not so much the volume as the secure access granted to the US, makes us overlook the political dysfunction in ...

News Flash: Christopher Hitchens Seeks Catholic Confessional
I was surprised to read Christopher Hitchens today, riding high on his moral horse as to the political, cultural and economic predations of Maximum Leader Robert Mugabe in his current Country of Residence, Zimbabwe. What people like Hitchens never seem to understand, is that morality is never just for other people, or leaders, or religious types. ...

Thank you very much!
Anne Applebaum is right. I remember stories from my father as well as my uncle how much they appreciated the fact that they were able to listen in their Youth to RIAS and similar broadcasts behind the iron curtain. They listened out of curiosity for real news. But of course also out of love for music that was not part of the state sponsored ...

Re: I'm glad you're glad
duc Iran is not like the US a far cry from it. But folks is folks I agree with that. I always thought that Saudi has something to do with it, if not directly then knowingly, this is because of the amount of Saudi's that were the terrorists and Osama bin Laden's connections with the guys who run the place over there. Iraq should have been ...

Re: Glossing over Chinese involvement in Africa
What should they do instead? I know, how about build iron smelters and gun factories next to the mines? That way, they can vertically integrate the conflict. That way, they can use the local resources to manufacture items that stay inside the country. Instead of shipping mortars and AK-47s back to africa after processing the natural resources, ...

Re: No Fly Zone Option
jwschmidt: Usama, you can't blame the US for the darfur situation because we still sorta support Khartoum in your own post, and then shoot down the idea that we should cut ties with Darfur and clean up the mess. Thats a contradiction, and it just exposes you as not really caring about darfur. I will dismiss your swipe that I do not care ...

I Blame America
That's right. I don't want American troops, or US ''advisors'', or America arms to go the Darfur rebels. I don't want UN sanctions to cripple Sudan like they killed Iraq for 12 years after '91. I want America to get the Hell out. Who runs Sudan? General Omar Bashir. Who is he? He is a graduate and close ally of the Egyptian regime. He was ...

Re: Tired of dumb questions
Yes, Prudie's answer made me very sad, as she seemed to miss the point. It isn't a compliment to tell a person from an English-speaking country in Africa that they speak English well. I assume this is what the African writer was trying to say. It would be like telling an Australian that they speak English well, and would be condescending ...

accents
You say, ''praising the English of someone who speaks with an accent is a harmless compliment''. Everybody speaks with an accent; native speakers of English are not restricted to the USA (where, as elsewhere, the English accent changes every few miles). English is spoken in many different ways. Why, those unaccustomed to ...
