    ''praising the English of someone who speaks with an accent is a harmless compliment'' Yes- I always make a habit of praising Americans who I can usually understand, despite their unusual accent. Unfortunately they often lack manners, and do not always take it as the harmless compliment that I intended.

    I'm from Manchester (well, a Lancashire-dialect-speaking village pretty close to Manchester). Love that I've been promoted a couple of classes. My working-class cred is unassailable! I've been in the States for 25 years or so--I think that's why my accent's so wacky. June
