Well-put, Griffon. And kudos to others who have noted multitudinous factual errors by Sofge.
Which leads me to wonder why, if he didn't particularly know the subject, he bothered to write the piece at all? Only thing I can come up with is that it's pretentiously controversial. Something dashed off to sound contrarian and intellectual, instead of just stupid and cranky.
Amazingly, it's possible to write the first draft of something, Erik, and improve upon it later (something you may want to consider for yourself). I can't think of anyone who belittles Henry Ford because his automobiles have been transformed into something far superior. Or, for that matter, the first person to come up with the household mop shouldn't be embarrassed that there are so many choices today. These are not to say that the invention of D&D is on a level with the automobile, but to say that it's pretty darn hard to come up with perfection. I'm not coming up with any examples off the top of my head.
The point is, he came up with it in the first place. It's a lot easier to edit than to create (again, something to consider, Erik), but Gygax created. Yep, others have since come up with something different, but even they recognize their debt to the person who made their improvements possible by creating the framework.
Perhaps you should stick to being cranky, intellectual, contrarian and pretentious about something you really know.
