Plotz and Goldberg Discuss Seinfeld
by heyposs

Here’s an excerpt from a running email conversation Plotz and Goldberg had during the last season of Seinfeld.

Jeffrery Goldberg and David Plotz were experimenting the internet to chat about Seinfeld. There is no transcript.

Dear David,

I continue to have a difficult time with the Elaine subplot. I know that Larry David no longer writes for the series, and you know that I consider the man a genius, but why isn’t Elaine married?

The current writers need to break free from the improbable world that David has constructed for us. I’m not suggesting I’m the final authority on all things pertaining to single women, but I have known a lot of females over the years. My experience tells me that women get married. And while the occasional single woman in New York may reject the lure of matrimony, the Melvillian underpinnings of the show will remain compromised as long as the writers persist with this unrealistic storyline.

Best,
Jeff

Dear Jeff,

Amazingly, I agree with you 100% when it comes to Elaine. Sometimes I feel as if the show has been hijacked by people whose agenda is substitute their life experiences for mine.

But what I really wanted to talk about this week was the mystifying popularity of two woefully overdrawn characters – namely George Costanza and Cosmos Kramer. I feel myself cringing whenever they come on screen. Collectively these two blowhards bring nothing useful to ongoing storylines. They have long since become hopeless clichés and for the life of me I am puzzled that fans of the show still welcome their presence.

You know I hate predict what will happen next, but I hope the writers will allow Jerry and Newman to finally make up and become good friends. With Newman and Jerry possibly sharing an apartment, the writers will have less need to include the improbable antics of George and Kramer.

Good one. They'd probably also criticize the writers for not telling us what the show is about...

Furthermore, the season in which the gang tries to create a television show called "Jerry" just seems like "Seinfeld" is cannibalizing itself. I think Larry David is far too close to this material.
