I'm surprised that the article didn't include a reference to the ancient Roman meaning of the word "testify", which originally meant, literally, "to swear to your testicles." This was common in courts long before men swore on the Bible.

speaking of the bible, i have a vague recollection of somebody in the Old Testament (Testament!) having to swear an oath by grabbing Abraham's crotch, of some such.
