We already have government health care
by plain zero
It's called the VA and it sucks. Why on earth would anyone want that for the rest of our system?

It sucks because it is underfunded.

Any simpleton can see that.

If you have $100M to spend on health, how is it best spent?

Through profit motives on insurance companies? They will take as much of that as profit as they can. It will be paid out to shareholders, to CEOs as bonuses, to boards and employees are cheap stock options and to doctors as inflated wages. They will only cover those patients likely to cost them nothing (i.e. those they can make a profit on) and will deny coverage to anyone they are legally allowed to who is likely to cost them a cent.

Or through the government? If you use a slimline system without layers of beauracray, you can hire more doctors, buy more x-ray and cat scan machines, treat more patients and not have to worry about making a profit.

A free market only works through the delivery of services where people WANT the services. It has failed (30 years and a health system worse that cuba IS FAILURE) again and again and again and again when people NEED the services.

As a society, we need to make the decision that health care is a need for all people, regardless of wealth.

While relatively underfunded, the VA sucks more because of the atmosphere fostered by socialized medicine and a unionized mentality among employees. You have to work at one to understand the difference. VA doctors have no incentive to go above and beyond what it takes to draw their, and in many instances (but not all) you get what you pay for with the medical staff, outside of VAMC's attached to medical schools.

The VA is quite effective however in data collection and some automation for primary care medicine (you get automatic reminders for xyz in the mail)

Is that a problem inherent with socialized medicine, or just with how it's done at VA? According to the movie, the British system pays doctors by how well their patients do.
