Bible

Is anyone else a little perturbed that the Bible is considered basic knowledge for high school students? How is a non-Christian student supposed to know Job? Yes, I believe everyone should get a basic understanding of the Bible in their lives (along with basic knowledge of other religious texts), but at the high school level? I think this question above all others in this survey shows the bias that the test makers have.

I apologize, I meant to say non-Judeo-Christian.

You're mistaken, at least in your implication -- there IS a bias, but it is toward those who grow up in cultured households, not Christian ones.

I am an atheist, a secularist, and actively promote both, but I do think that a student who repudiates superstition shouldn't at the same time spit on the record. That there isn't any God doesn't change one whit that fact that for thousands of years, the character of Job has been an object of contemplation for many intelligent people. Educated people should know this, just as they know who Achilles is, or Hamlet, or Newton. It's part of our shared intellectual heritage.

This question was used in the Literature Section of the test. Is the bible not literature?

Regardless of what your beliefs, this country was founded upon biblical principle and that will never change. You can change the words, you can change the laws, but you will never be able to get rid of God or his word. No matter how this country changes, it will still always be a part of the history of how this country was created.

What is really shameful about education in our country, is that men, women and children of times past would have given anything just to be able to read and write. Even in the first half of the 1900's many children still went uneducated because they had to work to help support thier families. Kids today have no idea what that is like. They are spoiled with Mommy and Daddy giving them everything and then the parents wonder why thier kid can't finish college or keep a job.

Education is a privilage. We need to instill in our children how important it is, along with morals and responsibility.
