Reality vs. Ideals
by ecox84

Hanna, yes, her 10-point plans are always impressive, but she will never ever be able to get the coalition she needs to get these things passed. Though both Obama and Clinton tend to debate this as if health care reform were a given, it won't be in the general election. Obama has a bigger coalition, and his plan is more likely to get bipartisan support. She's got lots of good ideas; she lacks the political capital to get them done.

Also, I don't think the analogy between health care reform and social security worked. Why do we have to have comprehensive health care all at once? It may make her plan "better" in the minds of some, but it also makes the plan harder to push through congress. Again, I point to the fact that the Republicans are hardly talking about this issue. And how will we enforce her mandate? I never heard her answer this last night. Did I miss something? That's a big issue for me.

Yes, if this were some hypothetical debate about issues, Clinton won intellectually. This isn't a hypothetical debate. And the voting on March 4th won't be hypothetical either.

We need mandatory healthcare because anybody can get sick. Even people without insurance can get cancer, and if they do, who ends up paying their hospital bills in the end? (Hint: all of us do)

Sure we need it, but her plan will NEVER get passed as long as she's the face behind it.

Mandatory healthcare is also the only way to do preventative healthcare. You need to be in the health care system when you are healthy to prevent disease! And that's the best way to cut costs. It is clear that early detection in the case of cancer can be the difference between cure and prolonged suffering and treatments and death. Again, only possible if you are going to the doctor before you know you're sick. And of course, this goes for nearly all the other common chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, etc.

I don't know that comparing the health care system you want to build to Social Security is such a hot idea. It's not like the Social Security system is in such great shape...
