Jon Stewart, say it isn't so.....
by tjcerveza

I thought Jon Stewart did a good job last night hosting the Oscars. I liked the riff he did on Senator Obama's name, and thought it clever, until..... This morning I was Listening to the Bob & Tom Radio Morning Show on my way to work. According to them, Jon lifted the bit from a comedian who has been on their show.

Perhaps Jon got permission from this guy, but I have to wonder if the Clinton Campaign finds out, will there be more crys of plagarism, this time on fake news reporters coverage of the Obama Campaign. Whaa?

I think making fun of Obama's name is public domain by now. You can even find examples of it in the dictionary under "Obvious"

I think that tjcerveza was not referring to Stewart stealing the concept of making Obama name jokes, but rather to the specific jokes that he used.

Yes,

Word for word, down to the name of Titler. I'm guessing Jon had permission from the comic. The world of Comedy is not so big that someone would not notice their material being ripped off by the host of the Academy Awards.

There was a credit at the end of the show for "special material written by" with a list of comics. It went by too fast for me to read them all, but at the least, I saw the name of David Javerbaum, a Daily Show writer. So the odds are the joke was both credited and paid for, and no one's feeling ripped off today.

I don't think it's any big secret that for a job the magnitude of hosting a three-hour-plus award show with international viewership, the comedian himself isn't responsible for 100% of the writing.

Can you be clear about what got "lifted"? The thing about Obama's name is totally obvious and Fox News went there before everyone else, but "Gaydolf Titler"? Say it isn't so. That's exactly the kind of joke that would have killed on The Daily Show.

The whole bit about Gaydolf Titler loosing the 1940's nomination for President. Hey, I know they have an Army of writers for these shows, but he was using "used" jokes told in public by another comic, not original material written by someone else for the show. I'm sure it got credited and paid for. I was making a lame joke about the Clinton's equally lame claim that Obama plagarized a speech from a friend and fellow politician.

Actually, the guy on the radio show must have stolen it. This was from an earlier episode of the daily show. I will find the episode.
