The only reason I own a gun is to kill people. I do not hunt and rarely target practice. I own a gun in case some nut breaks into my home with the intent of harming my family.

There has always been a percentage of People who are dangerous to others. Whilst that percentage is fairly low it is great enough for a sane person to realize that he or she must be prepared for a potentially fatal confrontation with one or more persons wishing to do harm to you or another.

To answer your question: No, I have never been robbed (while at home), nor raped. I was assaulted once, but didn't wish I had a weapon to KILL the attacker. No, I've never lived in a lawless land and pity any fool who does. I've always strived to live in nice neighborhoods and have kept dogs to roam the yard. So far, I've managed to live nearly 50 years without the need nor desire to KILL a fellow human being. If your world is such that you need lethal protection, may I advise you to MOVE.
