Kosovo
by augustus goddard

However unpalatable, a solution exists to the problem of Kosovo. The northern part of the country - the area nearest to Serbia and containing the battlefield of Kosovo - should be ceeded to Serbia. The rest of the country can affiliate with Albania, which should not be a problem as most Kosovars are ethnic Albanians.

Allowing Kosovo Albanians to join with Albania would validate the aspirations of the "Greater Albania" dream. In that case, Albania should get parts of Northern Greece and not insignificant parts of Macedonia and Serbia (Serbia without Kosovo). In 2001 a civil war broke out exactly because of this in Macedonia. It seems that Albanians and Serbs both have recently appealed to nationalist ideologies of "Greater" versions of their countries. This is not restricted to Serbs or Albanians, extremist factions among Hungarians and Romanians have it too, and some probably in Poland and elsewhere as well. Supporting this kind of decisions is more dangerous than it sounds.

apparently you are not very knowledgable of the region and its dynamics...

There is also a significant Serb population in southern Kosovo (near Brezovica), so ceding the north would not resolve the issue.

With regard to a "greater Albania", many here in Kosovo believe the six stars on the new flag represent the six areas which constitute the "Greater Albania".

At any rate, "affiliating with Albania" is not the issue at hand. I don't think you are suggesting that Kosovo become part of Albania (as that is NOT a viable solution, nor the reason the Kosovars declared independence).
