Reproductions
by RubyJackson

Wow, what's up with the color and saturation of these reproductions? I work at one of the museums that is credited with providing the digital file of one of these paintings, and I was responsible for the accurate color rendition. These reproductions are horrible. Why?

I'm glad you mentioned the color saturation, Ms. Jackson, because I, too, thought it was terrible, epecially for the soft palette of Poussin.

As I was going through the slides, it also seemed to me that the right side of many paintings had been cropped off. Does it appear that way to you as well?

And while I'm here, I might as well continue -- I wasn't crazy about Benefy's commentary, either. He spent more time on Poussin's biography than on his contributions as an artist, like his restrained emotion while retaining a spiritual intensity, his great Italian light, his classical nostalgia for ideal beauty, his use of sun and shadow to create perspective, etc.

Color and saturation on your screen is greatly dependent on your screen settings and calibration. Consider yourselves fortunate to have access to the originals.

Um, like I said, I work at a major museum in the photography department. Our monitors are properly calibrated. The images here have been altered with way too much contrast and saturation.

It's true, also that the image has been cropped, but only slightly from the left side and top.
