These guys haven't stopped calling her for "no reason". They have reasons. Just because the writer thought the dates were going well doesn't mean that they were going well for both people. The guys just don't want to go through the emotional hassle of formally calling it quits, especially since they are just dates. It happened to me plenty of times from the other direction when I was dating (I'm male). I really think there is no more to it than that.
