Giving the news vs. Pure provocation

I concur with Hitchens to a point; the American media has an interesting way of determining what is most newsworthy and what is not. But these cartoons have been posted in the media here, so I have to wonder what the purpose would be of revisiting the story.
I understand why the Danes are doing it. I absolutely agree that the cartoons should be available for public view, and they are to anyone with access to the internet. But aren't there certain boundaries that should be respected when it comes to the news? I'm not suggesting that it should necessarily be drawn at these cartoons, but I think everyone would agree that some things don't need to be trotted out for public view. The problem is that those boundaries may be rather arbitrary.
Reprinting these cartoons is a deliberate political statement; I understand that. But once a story has been reported one, three, a dozen times over the course of several months or a year, one has to wonder what purpose there is in reporting further on a story that is already well-known to everyone.
