Culture ministers Nazi-like? How about unconstitutional?
by Kade
I can't imagine any "promotion of culture" run by the government being at all compliant with the 1st Amendment. We get court suits over simply giving money to religious institutions. Imagine if presidents had their culture departments promoting their pet ideologies (much like PBS today, but I digress) I'm kind of irritated that Explainer treats it as a pesky little minutiae rather than putting it at the top of the list of reasons a "Secretary of Culture" will never be seen in the United States.
I'm fairly sure it would be constitutional

In addition to PBS, we have other cultural programs like the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Office of Faith-Based Initiatives (sic?) or the Voice of America.

Much like the Secretary of Homeland Security, Congress could create a cabinet level post "Secretary of Culture" by quilting together various fuzzy government programs.

Other vaguely "cultural" institutions like the Dept. of Education, the Federal Communications Commission, or the Centers for Disease Control could likewise be consolidated under the rubric of culture.

There's no reason why any of this would be necessarily unconstitutional... and little danger that any current court system would consider it so.

Culture and Religion are not synonyms. Some cultures may share a religion, but not necessarily. Look at France, they have a culture minister and are for the most part an anti-religious nation. Yet they have a well defined culture.

We used to have a department that basically was a culture department. Frustrated here because for the life of me I cant remember what it was called, and can't find it with google. Basically in the 90's it was termed by one of either Bush sr.'s or B.Clinton's people. Ever since, the USA has has found itself declining.

Well there are probably a lot of things you can't imagine. But it doesn't mean anything.
