Oh come on don't compare it to Lord of the Rings.

I agree that too many or incorrectly used special effects can detract from a movie, but to argue that a trilogy like Lord of the Rings or the first Matrix movie was damaged by special effects is incorrect, in my opinion. The stories in those cases were enhanced by the use of special effects - I would argue that those movies served as pioneering examples of how absolutely stunning effects can be used to very powerful effect. Especially given that in the Matrix, the unusual movements and (for that time) extraordinary effects were part of the narrative.
And for gosh' sakes, the Lord of the Rings script calls for a Balrog, giant eagles, walking trees, and an exploding volcano. I doubt that they could have portrayed those in a way that wouldn't have annoyed you. Perhaps you are watching the wrong kind of movies?
