I have 3 grandson's and they all bite, someone please tell me how to punish such a child ,without hitting him? Does it help to bite them back, what is the course of treatment for such a child. I wish someone can enlighten me on this subject, it's serious. Thank you PAT !

I have heard that you should put the child's hand in his own mouth and let him bite that.

The theory is that they then understand that their action causes pain, and (hopefully) will stop.

Usually it is a phase that they grow out of, thankfully!

When my son started gnawing on the neighbor girl, and she is the only person we have caught him biting, we started seperating him from the kids. We would get down on his level, hold both his arms and say NO WE DO NOT BITE NO BITING repeating as needed. Teh we had to stop playing with those kids and go home. He was under a year so it was hard to tell if he was getting it. With just one kid as his victim, and yes she was a smaller little girl, I don't really know if we had any effect.

If my son continued to bite and was not getting the message I would try biting him back and would resort to smacking him. Kids bite for a varity of reasons and figguring out what they are, and knowing what kind of punichsment your kids respond to, will help you decide how to approch it.

One another note... I don't know if I bit alot but I did get cured on it in one fell swoop.... My Dad had on shorts on summer day, he was a football player, 6ft 3in 220, no fat, with big meaty thighs, anyhow I was 3 and snuck up to sink my teeth in. My Dad, on pure reaction, smacked at his leg and sent me flying across the yard. I apparentally caught air and landed with a thud on my butt. My Dad said I was so shocked I didn't even cry, I just got up and walked off. There were no biting issues after that and my Dad felt super bad, and we have a great story.

My mother says I bit my twin sister when we were little, but she understood the reason for it. My sister walked before I did and it was easy for her to take a toy away from me. So I bit the hand that was pulling at my toy. She'd go running to Mama and Mama would say, "Bite her back!" But she wouldn't. When I caught up with my sister in walking ability and could better defend my turf (or toy), I stopped biting her.
