Earlier in the campaign (when admittedly there was less to talk about), there was a series of surveys that showed a significant percentage of the population was not willing to vote for a Mormon. Huckabee and McCain have both in turn exploited that with not-so-subtle digs at Romney and Mormons in general, but I've seen nothing on this topic since. Why has no one asked/analyzed who these people ended up voting for? Is Huckabee coasting along on a tide of Baptist bigots who wouldn't have voted for Romney no matter the alternative? If so, too bad for the country -- not because Romney's the best candidate, just because he deserves to compete on merit -- but at least we'd know it wasn't really (or only) him people were voting against.

No one has asked/analyzed because they like the fact that Romney is being taken down (at whatever the cost). The only ones that have asked/analyzed are the outspoken conservatives (Rush, etc) that support Romney and believe he deserves a fair shake at things, regardless of religion.

It's not so much that they care about giving Romney a fair shake as that they can't stand McCain and know that Huckabee has no support outside of the evangelical fringe.

Just four years ago the very same people (Rush, etc) were castigating Romney for his mixture of social and fiscal moderation (he was a businessman, but no anti social spender), and at the same time castigating Kerry for being a "flip-flopper".

Now, Romney has "floped" (flipped?) into social conservatism, and he becomes the darling of the "conservatives"

Why, less than 5 months ago, some of the "conservative base" were questioning Romney's Christian bona fides; unable to see his being a Mormon as anything more than an unacceptable "cultishness".

McCain, with his 82% conservative voting record in Congress, is not conservative enough, just because he didn't support everything George Bush proposed?

No joke. McCain is clearly the front runner an the rest of the Repubs who jumped ship are not wanting to admit their failure, so they cling to politically incorrect items, to give themselves something to float on.

Romney has flipped so many times, he is as astable as they come.

It the frontrunner were a mainstream or evangelical protestant conservative to their liking, Rush et al would be the first to make an issue of Romney's being a Mormon. Their sudden concern for religious inclusiveness is the convenient product of their anti-McCain fixation I assure you.

And as for feeling bad for Romney that his mormonism has hurt his campaign (at least in Iowa), he bit the hand that fed him in rebuking every social position he originally took as governor of Massachusetts, and publically mocked the commonwealth as well. To turn his back on those that elected him in order to woo the most intolerant demographic in the American political landscape...It's his own damn fault.

And one more thing, even Ann Coulter admitted he's a flip flopper and is saying what he's saying to gain support, but as she said, "he's saying what I want to hear."

Romney was the best canidate and too many people do not want to admit "they are bigots when it comes to his religion". These are not my words but the main stream media's. Now if he were black or a woman and still a republican they would have used all three against him. Republicans have a different set of rules used against them. Democrates seem to be much better at looking past the differences and looking for the common bond. That is why we will have a democrate in the White House this time next year.

Romney HAS NOT changed his mind any more than our legendary Ronald Reagan did when he was alive. Reagan started out as a democrate and his positions changed as he grew and eduacted himself on things
