Korean Interest
by jack_cerf
How about considering what the government of South Korea thinks should be done about Kim Jong Il and his government. After all, if a Second Korean War is fought, it isn't going to be fought in Nebraska. And if the North Korean regime collapses or is overthrown by its people, South Korea is going to wind up paying the bill for picking up the pieces. If they are content to string things along, wait for KJI to die childless, and hope to buy out whatever junta comes after him, we should be as well.

Kim Jong Il isn't childless; his son is being groomed to succeed him...and there's little reason to believe that the regime will somehow collapse once Kim Jong Il is dead.

My error, but it doesn't change the basic analysis if there is a Kim dynasty. How to handle the DPRK is fundamentally an ROK problem. They are the ones who will bear the brunt of any war, and they are the ones who will have to deal with the issue of reunification. We can't plausibly threaten force, or even push the DPRK into a corner, without the consent of the ROK.
